Nickel microsegregation in high strength low alloy multi-pass submerged arc welds

Ni x-ray element mapping showing crystallization pattern in high strength low alloy welds. Horizontal zoning stem from reheating of previous weld metal passes and darker regions are known as heat affected zones, whereas the finer cellular and columnar dendritic zoning (vertical) is a product of segregation during solidification. Nickel is confirmed to be segregating to interdendritic regions during the solidification process using electron microprobe at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
